Europe aims to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Therefore, the European Green Deal paves the way with ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions between 40% to 55% by 2030. In this context, the reduction of CO2 emissions and the capture of atmospheric CO2 within the Carbon Economy Initiative is a priority in the EU.
Our project partner, University of Almería (Spain), is contributing to this goal by actively removing CO2 from the atmosphere through innovative agricultural practices that have a tangible impact on soil fertility.
They have set up an experimental field of early-maturing peach orchards using sustainable techniques such as covering crops and incorporating pruning residues into agricultural soils.
