Outstanding Research on Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Agriculture

28/06/2024

The University of Padua (UNIPD) is proud to highlight the excellent work of Elysia Lewis, a Master’s student in Sustainable Agriculture at the DAFNAE Department (Agronomy, Animals, Food, Natural Resources, and Environment). Elysia has been conducting groundbreaking research on greenhouse gas emissions from conservation and conventional farming systems using an automated closed-chamber system. For over a year, she has been collecting continuous monitoring data at the Toniolo Farm of the University of Padua in Italy.

Her findings are already proving invaluable:
“The data already show that soils with high compaction, especially in the deep layer, are less likely to emit nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas. I am confident this research will be crucial for Carbon Farming initiatives and will help establish best practices for soil conservation.”

Elysia is also finalizing a collaborative Master’s student exchange programme between the University of Padua and Georgia State University, resulting in a Dual Degree.
