Project description
Short desription
CARBON 4 SOIL QUALITY is an Interreg Euro-MED project that aims to advance sustainable soil management through carbon farming.
Long description
Project Title: CARBON 4 SOIL QUALITY
Overview: The CARBON 4 SOIL QUALITY project, led by the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia, is an innovative initiative aimed at combating climate change and enhancing soil health across the Mediterranean. Supported by the Interreg Euro-MED programme and co-funded by the European Union, this project focuses on developing sustainable soil management strategies through carbon farming—a method that captures atmospheric CO2 and stores it in the soil.
Objectives: Our primary goal is to create a scientific foundation for carbon farming by developing a standardized toolbox that includes:
- A catalogue of soil organic reference values.
- Methodologies for organic carbon analysis and soil quality monitoring.
- Guidelines for carbon farming techniques.
- Business models for carbon farming.
- Recommendations for agriculture carbon credit schemes and environmental certification systems.
Importance: By integrating carbon farming into agricultural practices, we aim to improve soil fertility, increase biodiversity, and significantly reduce atmospheric CO2 levels. The project is set against the backdrop of the European Green Deal and contributes directly to the EU’s climate action targets.
Collaboration: The project harnesses the expertise of multiple research institutions and agricultural specialists from several Mediterranean countries, fostering a transnational approach to address the shared challenges of soil degradation and climate change.
Media Contact: For more information, to request interviews, or to discuss collaboration opportunities, please contact our Communication officer Ms. Darja Demšar at darja.isd@gmail.com.
