Over 60% of European Soils Declared Unhealthy Due to Unsustainable Practices

09/02/2024

Over 60% of European soils are declared unhealthy: Scientific evidence shows that soils in Europe are increasingly deteriorating, with more than 60% classified as unhealthy. This degradation, driven primarily by the unsustainable use of natural resources in the EU, is exacerbating both the climate and biodiversity crises.

The consequences of soil degradation go far beyond environmental concerns. They directly affect the provision of essential ecosystem services, including food, feed, fiber, timber, nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration, pest control and water regulation. Farmers bear the brunt of these impacts as they face lower productivity and greater challenges in producing healthy and nutritious food.
