Celebrating World Soil Day 2024: Caring for Soils, Securing Our Future

05/12/2024

On World Soil Day 2024, we join the global community in recognizing the critical role soils play in sustaining life on Earth. This year’s theme, “Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage,” emphasizes the importance of accurate soil data for sustainable management and food security.

Aligned with this vision, the Carbon 4 Soil Quality Thematic Project, part of the Interreg Euro-MED Natural Heritage Mission, is actively addressing soil degradation and climate change across the Mediterranean region.

Our Key Goals:

  • Promote Sustainable Soil Management: Developing innovative carbon farming techniques to store carbon, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance soil health.
  • Create a Carbon Farming Toolbox: Providing essential tools, including soil carbon reference values, analysis methods, farming guidelines, business models, and recommendations for carbon credit systems.
  • Enable Transnational Testing: Adapting solutions to diverse Mediterranean soils and climates through cross-border cooperation.
  • Support Policy Integration: Delivering reliable data and socio-economic models to guide sustainable agricultural policies.
  • Enhance Soil and Biodiversity: Improving soil fertility, water retention, and biodiversity while ensuring food security and strengthening farmer resilience.

With sustainable soil management, up to 58% more food could be produced, making healthy soils essential for our future. Let’s protect our soils and work together to shape a sustainable future for agriculture, biodiversity, and the planet.
